Server Crashing

It's an unfortunate event most server owners will experience: your server crashing. In this guide, we will walk through the possible reasons for this to happen.

ATTENTION

Unless all servers on a node at FPS.ms are experiencing issues at the same time, absolutely no support is provided whatsoever! Do not contact or ping any of our staff with your issues, but instead open a ticket on our Discord server instead.

We rely on your self-sufficiency and would like to remind you we only provide the infrastructure. How you configure your server is entirely up to you.

Overloading your server

FPS.ms allocates a generous amount of resources to each free server. If you keep your plugin and mod count low and don't change the FPS.ms default configuration for your free server, your server should run fine in most cases.

Too many plug-ins or mods

Try to keep your plug-in or mod count under 10 - 20, depending on the amount of players. Anything over that will probably cause your server to crash sooner or later.

NOTE

Rename your plugins folder temporarily and restart your server to find out if your server crashing is related to a plugin.

Also make sure your plugins and mods are all up-to-date. If you notice a plugin or mod being buggy or noticed it generating a lot of errors in your console, uninstall and search for an alternative. The code will probably not be the best anyway.

Too many players

You might have too many players on your server. Keep your player count under 5, in the most ideal situation keep it under 10.

For Minecraft servers, especially if your players are spread far away from each other, the server will suffer and your TPS will go down. In this case, it might be a good idea to install a chunk pre-generator plugin such as Chunky and let it pre-generate your world overnight when no players are online. This ensures your server doesn't have to handle players and generate chunks at the same time.

Configuration error

Your server probably has something configured wrongly or there's a memory leak happening in one of your plugins or mods. For Minecraft servers, try using the Spark Profiler to see what's causing your server to be unstable.

Node overload

In rare cases, your node might be overloaded by the amount of active servers. In that case, we will inform you through Discord.

Physical Hardware or Network issues

The node your free server is hosted on might have crashed or there might be network problems in the datacenter. In that case, the database engineers will pick the issue up and we will inform you through Discord.
